Abstract

961,835. Forging manipulators. BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. Aug. 22, 1960 [Aug. 20, 1959], No. 28488/59. Heading B3H. A manipulator for moving a body such as a forging bath vertically and horizontally has its peel 12 mounted on a support 22, 23 whose height is adjustable. The peel is mounted for rotation in bearings 14, 15 by a motor 20 as described in Specification 874,909, and is indexed as described in Specification 905,715. Rear bearing 15 carries trunnions 21 movable horizontally between upper and lower rails 22, 23 to permit longitudinal movement of the peel by an hydraulic cylinder 26. The rails are mounted for vertical adjustment by hydraulic rams 25, 25A. Tilting movement of the peel about front bearing 14 is effected by hydraulic rams 18; alternatively springs may be used to permit rather than produce the tilting movement. Rams 25, 25A may be replaced by a parallel linkage and ram 26 by a rack-and-pinion mechanism, both as described in Specification 874,909. The manipulator may be mounted on a carriage or on a turn-table.
