Abstract
961,765. Steam traps. H. R. GERDTS, and W. F. GERDTS, [trading as GUSTAV F. GERDTS KOMM.-GES.]. Dec. 7, 1962 [Dec. 7, 1961], No. 46206/62. Heading F4U. In a steam trap in which a freely movable valve plate 6 divides a control chamber 4 into a pressure chamber 7 and an exit chamber 8, one face of the valve plate 6 co-operating with valve seatings 2a and 3a surrounding inlet and outlet ports 2 and 3 respectively, a temperature-responsive element acts to move the valve plate to the open position when the steam trap temperature falls below a predetermined value. As shown, Figs. 1 and 2, the temperatureresponsive element comprises a bi-metallic or spencer snap-acting disc 11 resting on a peripheral ledge 12 in the exit chamber 8, and prevented from. rotation by projections 13 which engage slots 14 in the disc. Cut-outs 11a allow the valve seat bosses 2a and 3a to project through the disc 11. When cold, the disc has a shape which holds the valve plate clear of the valve seats, Fig. 1 (broken lines), but when the temperature exceeds a certain value, e.g. the steam saturation temperature, the disc assumes a shape so that it lies wholly within the exit chamber, leaving the valve plate free to move in the normal manner. In a second embodiment, Fig. 4, a bi-metallic strip 15 is fastened to the centre of the valve plate upper face, and has legs 16 so that when cold, it holds the valve plate 6 clear of the valve seats as shown. In a further embodiment, a bi-metallic disc, fastened to the centre of the valve plate lower face, curves away therefrom when cold, but lies flush with the valve plate surface when hot, forming the sealing face of the valve plate. Other forms of temperature-responsive element may be used. Specification 845,201 is referred to.
