Abstract

A tantalum carbide filament is prepared by packing a coil of tantalum wire with powdered graphite to maintain the shape and heating to an extent sufficient to carburize the coil. The heating may be carried out in an inert atmosphere or one containing hydrogen and a hydrocarbon. In making a lamp mount having a tantalum carbide filament, a coiled coil of tantalum wire is dipped in a colloidal suspension of carbon, a mandrel of steel or tungsten is inserted in the turns of the major coil and the coil then rolled in powdered graphite, dried, covered with graphite powder in a graphite boat and heated in an electric furnace in an atmosphere of argon or hydrocarbon. Surplus graphite is then removed by blowing a stream of air containing particles of fine abrasive on to the coil. Alternatively, the coil is immersed in water and subjected to supersonic vibration.
