Abstract

961,187. Travelling wave tubes. RADIO CORPORATION OF AMERICA. Sept. 26, 1960 [Oct. 29, 1959], No. 33045/60. Heading H1D. In a travelling wave tube provided with a delay line consisting of transverse loading elements in a hollow waveguide a set of electrodes is introduced interleaved between the loading elements to form with the loading elements a periodic electrostatic focusing system. The delay line bars 3, Fig. 3, may or may not have extensions forming drift tubes and the set of electrodes 7 are connected to a strip which may or may not be connected to the waveguide wall or may be so connected by coaxial chokes. In the embodiment of Fig. 9, consecutive delay line bars and electrodes are rotated by 90 degrees, the electrodes being at 45 degrees with respect to the bars so that the structure simulates a helix. The chokes 11 are #/4 open ended coaxial lines with metal rods 15, metal cups 17 and a ceramic sealing tube 19. The waveguide is a stack of metal blocks and plates. The chokes may be used in Fig. 3. In Fig. 12 the partitions 23 with drift tubes 25 have segmental coupling apertures alternately on opposite sides. The stack of square metal blocks and plates are brazed or soldered together. Rods 31 of lossy material extend through and are brazed to a ceramic support 33 brazed to the block. The output is taken from a rectangular waveguide having an oval window and a similar structure is used for the input. The lossy rods 31 are of carbonized ceramic and may taper. The gun comprises indirectly heated cathode 43, focusing electrode 47 and anode 49, the cathode and anode having disc seal leads through ceramic rings. Plate 59 is optional. The lossy rods 31 may be replaced by metal rods of random lengths, or of equal lengths with D.C. connections of unequal lengths or of equal lengths extending through a lossy bar or strip to prevent oscillations on the eletrode structure. The inner surfaces of the drift tubes can be double conical to improve the focusing field distribution. The tubes may be backward wave amplifiers or oscillators or forward wave amplifiers.
