Abstract

961,107. Pipe coupling; joint-making packings. OLAER PATENT CO. Jan. 31, 1963 [Feb. 8, 1962], No. 4101/63. Headings F2B and F2G. A distortable ring for use in securing a flanged pipe in an opening in a body, e.g. a pressure accumulator, comprises an elastic annulus 35 and a split collar 26, 26<SP>1</SP> composed of at least two rigid segments, the collar and annulus having complementary interlocking portions which allow relative sliding motion. A distortible annulus 35 (Fig. 1), has channels of complementary shape to flanges on a split metal collar 26, 26<SP>1</SP> the outer faces of the collar and annulus being shaped to fit the internal surface of the open body 12, the collar 26, 261 having an internal shoulder 33 to engage the flange on the pipe. The flanged pipe 18, having a shoulder 18<SP>1</SP> of sufficient width to enter the opening in the accumulator 12 is inserted in the accumulator. The annulus 35 is bent in two, the split collar 26, 26<SP>1</SP> sliding in the grooves to allow this, is also inserted and is allowed to straighten. The pipe 18 is drawn down until the shoulder 18<SP>1</SP> rests on a shoulder 33 of the split collar. A nut 22 is used to tighten the joint. A sealing ring 18a is used to assist sealing. In the modification shown in Fig. 1 the pipe 18 forms a seating for a poppet valve 24. In a further modification, Fig. 12, the annulus forms the seal between a flanged pipe 53 and the open body 51. Two beads 56, 54 on the annulus engage a shoulder 57 on the pipe 53 and the inner surface 55 of the body 51 respectively and form the seal under pressure from a spring 58 engaging the body 51 and a circlip 60 on the pipe 53. In a further modification, Fig. 13 (not shown), the upper poppet engages the flange of the pipe along the edge of the flange and the interlocking portions of the annulus and collar are L-shaped.
