Abstract

In the separation of butadiene from a selective solvent such as furfural, in which it is dissolved, by stripping, heat is recovered from the hot stripped solvent by controlling the level of liquid in the stripper removing a variable flow stream of solvent, dividing the solvent into a constant flow stream and a smaller variable flow stream and recovering heat from the constant stream. The heat may be used in the reboiler of a fractionator such as that used to separate butadiene from acetylenes in the hydrocarbon stream stripped from the solvent. The variable solvent stream may be cooled and recombined with the cooled constant stream or may be recombined and further heat recovered e.g. to heat a hydrocarbon feed stream to an absorber where butadiene is dissolved in the solvent. In the latter case the flow of solvent through the heat exchanger is kept constant by means of a variable by-pass.
