Abstract

The dyeing properties of synthetic polymer articles containing basic modifiers are improved by treatment with a salt of a metal of Group I, II, III, IV, VII or VIII of the Periodic Table. The specified polymers are acrylic polymers, vinyl polymers and especially poly-a -olefins above all isotactic polypropylene. The basic modifier may be a polyalkyleneimine or a nitrogen-containing polycondensate of epichlorhydrin. A number of suitable nitrogen-containing compounds from which the poly-condensate may be derived are specified, especially p perazine, n-octadecylamine and n-dodecylamine. The specified metal salts are copper sulphate, ferrous sulphate, aluminium sulphate, cerium sulphate, stannous chloride, manganous chloride, mercuric chloride, titanium trichloride, zinc chloride, ferric chloride, cobalt nitrate, lead nitrate, thorium nitrate, cadmium acetate, nickelous sulphate, magnesium sulphate, calcium chloride, bismuth nitrate and beryllium chloride. The preferred articles are fibres of isotactic polypropylene which may be made by melt-spinning a mix containing at least 75% polypropylene together with the basic modifier and may also contain a "solid dispersing agent" (many specified), organic or inorganic pigments, stabilizers or opacifiers. The metal salt may be applied as a solution or dispersion in water or an organic solvent or in the solid state either before or after stretching at temperatures up to 10 DEG C. below the softening point of the polymer. Improved dyeability is shown using solid, metallised, disperse, basic and vat dyes. Examples of treating and dyeing polypropylene fibres are given.ALSO:The dyeing properties of synthetic polymer articles containing basic modifiers are improved by treatment with a salt of a metal of Group I, II, III, IV, VII or VIII of the Periodic Table. The specified polymers are polyamides, polyesters, acrylic polymers, vinyl polymers and especially poly-a -olefins above all isotactic polypropylene. The basic modifier may be a polyalkyleneimine or a nitrogen-containing polycondensate of epichlorhydrin. A number of suitable nitrogen-containing compounds from which the polycondensate may be derived are specified, especially piperazine, n-octadecylamine and n-dodecylamine. The specified metal salts are copper sulphate, ferrous sulphate, aluminium sulphate, cerium sulphate, stannous chloride, manganous chloride, mercuric chloride, titanium trichloride, zinc chloride, ferric chloride, cobalt nitrate, lead nitrate, thorium nitrate, cadmium acetate, nickelous sulphate, magnesium sulphate, calcium chloride, bismuth nitrate and beryllium chloride. Improved dyeability is shown using acid, metallised, disperse, basic and vat dyes. Examples of treating and dyeing polypropylene fibres are given.
