Abstract

A method of producing pigmented nylon filaments by polycondensing a nylon salt to a spinnable nylon polymer and extruding the polymer into filaments is characterized in that an admixture of pigment and one or more aryl sulphonamides is added before, during or after polycondensation but before extrusion. Preferably, an aqueous slurry containing an admixture of sulphonamide and 0.5-70% by weight pigment, based on the weight of the admixture, is mixed with nylon flake and the flake is melted to incorporate the pigment. Suitable pigments include carbon black, TiO2, CdS, CoS, and iron oxides. Suitable sulphonamides are of general formula <FORM:1092622/C3/1> wherein n is 1-8, and R1 and R2 are H or C1-C8 alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl and may be the same or different. Several are specified, and a preferred sulphonamide consists of a mixture of N - ethyl - o - and p - toluene sulphonamide and o-and p-toluene sulphonamide. In examples nylon flake is pigmented.
