Abstract

960,782. Photographic material and processes. INTERNATIONAL POLAROID CORPORATION. Aug. 21, 1962, No. 32087/62. Heading G2C. A photographic element for a multicolour diffusion transfer process has, on one side of a common support, blue, green and red-sensitive silver halide emulsion layers and contiguous therewith, respectively, yellow, magenta and cyan dyedevelopers, at least one of the silver halide emultion layers comprising alkali-soluble cellulose acetate hydrogen phthalate or water-soluble hydroxyethyl- or carboxymethylhydroxyethylcellulose, a mixture of carboxymethyl cellulose and hydroxyethyl cellulose, or an alkali metal, ammonium or quaternary ammonium salt of carboxymethyl cellulose or cellulose acetate hydrogen phthalate. The silver halide emulsion may contain gelatin or a substitute therefor e.g. N-carboxyalkoxymethyl polyamides and polyamide ethers; partially hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl alcohol and the acetals thereof; partially hydrolysed cellulose acetate; and water-permeable polymers and copolymers of acrylic acid and acrylamide. The elements are exposed and permeated with an aqueous alkaline composition to develop the emulsions and thus form an imagewise distribution of mobile yellow, magenta and cyan dyes which are transferred by inbibition to a superposed image-receiving layer to form a multicolour positive dye image. The figure shows the relationship of the various layers of the element and image-receiving sheet during transfer and is self-explanatory. Each pair of emulsion and dye developer strata may be separated from the other pairs by spacer or barrier layers e.g. of gelatin and/or polyvinyl alcohol. A yellow filter layer may be incorporated in front of the green-sensitive layer. The imagereceiving layer may be a nylon, e.g. N-methoxymethyl polyhamethylene adipamide, partially hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate, plasticised or unplasticised polyvinyl alcohol, baryta paper, or cellulose acetate plus filler e.g. oleic acid. Suitable dyedevelopers are those disclosed in Specification 804, 972. The aqueous processing composition used in the examples comprised 3 % sodium hydroxide, 1.2% 1-phenyl-3-pyrazolidone, 0.9% 2, 5-bisethyleneiminohydroquinone, 0.12% 6-nitrobenzimidazole and 5% sodium carboxymethyl cellulose. Specifications 804,971 and 804,972 are referred to.
