Abstract
A process for the preparation of anhydrides of dicarboxylic acids comprises the oxidation of unsaturated hydrocarbons containing at least 4 carbon atoms, e.g. preparation of maleic anhydride by the oxidation of an unsaturated hydrocarbon having at least 4 carbon atoms or of an aromatic hydrocarbon or preparation of phthalic anhydride by oxidation of an alkyl benzene or a naphthalene hydrocarbon, in a gaseous phase in a medium containing molar oxygen, between 300-650 DEG C. in the presence of an oxidising catalyst having the formula P2O5x.V2O5y. Ni3PO4z where x=0.2 and 2 mols, y=0.5 and 1.1 mols and z=0.002 and 0.2 mols. Examples describe the catalytic oxidation of butene and butadiene to maleic anhydride and acetic acid, benzene to maleic anhydride, and naphthalene and o-xylene to phthalic anhydride.ALSO:Oxidation catalysts are prepared by adding H3PO4 to finely powdered V2O5 and Li3PO4 to form a paste of putty consistency, allowing the paste to set and drying at 120-150 DEG C. for 1-3 hours. Thereafter the catalyst may be roasted between 750 and 1100 DEG C. The catalyst may have the formula P2O5x, V2O5y, Li3PO4z where x=0,2-2 mols., y=0,5-1,1 mols. and z=0,002-0,2 mols. The catalyst may be used in a fluidized bed.
