Abstract
960,365. Capacitors; semi-conductor devices. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 17, 1960 [Aug. 19, 1959], No. 28396/59. Headings H1K and H1M. An electrical component 1 (Fig. 5) e.g. a rolled aluminium foil capacitor with polystyrene dielectric is placed within an insulating e.g. nylon or polystyrene container 2 having a closed end 3 and the leads 4, 5 are bonded to extension wires 4a, 5a doubled to lie outside the container positioned by diametrically disposed axial grooves and a turn of insulating tape surrounding the container (Fig. 2, not shown). An insulating spacer 13 is placed at the bottom of a metal outer container 8 of square section into which the inner container is inserted with its open end adjacent to the closed end of the outer container and sealed in by an initial charge 9 of insulating plastic e.g. an epoxy resin extending to the level x-x (Fig. 7); the wire locating grooves being diagonally disposed of the outer container. A further charge 10 of insulating material completely seals the remaining space between the containers and locates the lead wires, leaving the component surrounded by an air space 11, which may alternatively be filled with wax or silicone grease. The inner container may be plugged with flexible insulating material e.g. expanded plastic or rubber. The leads 4, 5 may be strips of copper alloy bonded to wires 4a, 5a formed as lugs for external connection into a printed circuit. The wires 4a, 5a may be doubled and laid along the inner wall of the inner container, and may then pass through apertures in the closed end thereof which are then sealed with insulating compound. The component may be a resistor, rectifier, or semiconductor.
