Abstract
960,237. Ion sources. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 24, 1962 [Sept. 4, 1961], No. 31743/61. Heading H1D. A mass spectrometer ion source has in its chamber wall and communicating with a sole channel leading to the main body of the spectrometer a variable width exit slit-two movable plates 53, 54, Fig. 4, chamfered at 62, 63 to form a knife edge slit can be moved to the right within tapered guide plates 55, 56 by a plunger 59 which carries a peg 68 extending through a hole formed by triangular recesses in the plates 53, 54; the plates 53, 54 are returned to the left by springs 64, 65. The plates 53, 54 move apart as they are moved to the right. Plate 51 is a carrier plate and plates 57, 58 resilient retaining plates. In a variation a peg on each movable plate co-operates with a 90 degree wedge on the plunger. In Fig. 2 plates 36, 37 are moved apart against leaf springs 41, 42 by a tapered plunger 27. Fixed and movable parts in both embodiments are made of dissimilar metals and molybdenum sulphide may be used as a lubricant. In a further embodiment similar to that of Fig. 4 all relatively moving parts are spaced apart by sapphire balls or rollers.
