Abstract

960,226. Scintillation counters. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Jan. 30, 1962 [Feb. 2, 1961], No. 3929/61. Heading G1A. [Also in Division G6] A scintillation counter for measuring beta activity in a gas comprises two hemispherical cups 17,18 of a beta sensitive organic phosphor clamped together to define an internal spherical chamber bounded by a thickness of phosphor sufficient to stop beta particles having energies up to about 5 MeV. Diametrically opposed flats 27, 28 afford coupling faces for photomultiplier tubes (not shown) and the phosphor halves are backed, as indicated by crosses, with an adherent coating of a compacted reflector powder. Inlet and outlet passages 25, 26 allow gas to be fed into and out of the chamber; the flow may be continuous or discontinuous according to whether it is desired to measure the radioactivity of the gas or the rate of decay of radioactivity. As an aid to decontamination, the chamber may be lined by a thin disposable line of a synthetic resin such as polyethylene.
