Abstract

960,218. Can or bottle carriers. ILLINOIS TOOL WORKS Inc. July 18, 1960 [July 17, 1959], No. 25063/60. Heading A4G. [Also in Division B8] A device for carrying beaded cans, bottles &c., placed side by side, comprises a plurality of bead-engaging means interconnected by webs 51 and having arcuate portions 52 which engage the can beads as shown in Fig. 6. The device may be made from resilient plastics and the arcuate portions are deformed as the device is applied to sets of cans so that they grip the beads. The areas above the tops of the cans may be blanked out and the areas 55 may also be removed. A wire handle 56 passes completely around the central webs 51 or a plastic U-shaped handle may be used in conjunction with apertures in areas 55 to receive the ends of the handle. Fig. 8 shows a second embodiment 44a made from plastics or sheet metal with bead engaging means consisting of alternately disposed Z-shaped arcuate portions 62, 63. In a modification twelve cans are carried in two layers of six by a device having oppositely directed arcuate portions, Fig. 16, and loops in the web (Fig. 13 not shown) may be used for the insertion of a U-shaped handle and the web may be cut along its centre line to produce two carriers. In a further embodiment, Fig. 20, the device has curved grooves with bead engaging arcuate portions 52d and fingers 78 to engage the opposite inner sides of the can beads. Holes 76d allow for insertion of a handle. In a simpler form of this modification, for four cans, a single disc has four curved grooves and a central hole for the handle. In a further embodiment (Fig. 25, not shown) the web 51 is pre-weakened by slits to permit individual cans to be separated from the device together with their bead engaging means and to allow canting of the cans towards one another when the device is carried.
