Abstract

Perchlorethylene and carbon tetrachloride are obtained by the chlorination, in two stages, of propylene and/or unsaturated chlorinated derivatives thereof, involving an additive chlorination in the presence of an iron-based catalyst followed by a chlorinolysis, the additive chlorination being effected by means of excess chlorine from the residual gases of the chlorinolysis, the resulting saturated chlorinated compounds then being subjected to chlorinolysis in a fluidised bed of inert material at 300-600 DEG C. in the presence of sufficient CCl4 such that the molecular ratio of CCl4 to (CCl4+chlorinated propanes) at the inlet of the furnace is 0.4-0.95, and in the presence of an excess of chlorine which is at least sufficient, after recycling to the first stage, for the chlorination of all the unsaturated material fed to the first stage. In worked examples of the process the main products obtained are C2Cl4, CCl4 and C2Cl6.
