Abstract

959,889. Coiling helically jointed tubes; seaming. SPIRO INTERNATIONAL A.S. June 17, 1960 [June 18, 1959], No. 20985/59. Addition to 830,504. Headings B3A, B3E and B3J. An improvement in or modification of the machine for producing helical lock seamed tubing as claimed in the parent Specification comprises either (a) the provision of an inside roll and, co-operating therewith, an outside spool whose axis is radial to the coiling head, which together give an initial pinching to the mating flange and channel at the edges of the strip, or (b) carrying the rollers, between which the mating flange and channel are pinched into the finished helical lock seam, by a unitary mounting or (c) the provision of guide and support means for the finished tube comprising a longitudinal rotatable roller and an abutment rod parallel and adjustable laterally relative thereto. Strip 4 is pushed by rollers 3, which form a channel 6, Fig. 7, along one edge of the strip and a flange 5 along the other edge. As the strip 4 enters a helically slotted cylindrical forming head 1 the flange 5 is bent over to 45 degrees by a spool 7 having a reduced diameter neck 13 and freely rotatably supported in a bar 21 axially adjustable along a lower mandrel bar 12 extending into the head 1. The spool 7 cooperates with the edge of a guide plate 2 to bend the flange 5. The bar 12 also carries a roller 14 which co-operates with a spool 8 to pinch the mating flange 5 and channel 6 together at an angle of 45 degrees. The spool 8 is carried on a plate 16, Fig. 5, pivoted at 17 and is adjustable laterally by a handle 16a on the plate 16. The mating channel 6 and flange 5 is finally pinched over between a roller 9 supported on a mandrel bar 11 inside the head 1 and a roller 10 supported outside at a location of 90 to 180 degrees from the beginning of the helical slot in the head 1. The rollers 9, 10 may be carried by a U-shaped bracket 28, Fig. 8, and mounted in eccentric bushings rotatable to adjust the rollers, by levers 31a, 32a. The seamed tube is guided from the head 1 by freely rotatable guide tubes 36, Figs. 1, 10 and by a laterally adjustable guide rod 38. When the leading end of the tube engages a switch a saw 42 is operated to sever the tube. The finished tubes are displaced on to racks 43. Lubricant is fed to the inner surface of the head 1.
