Abstract

1,032,560. Coiling helices; making tubes; rolling. HOWELL & CO. Ltd. Feb. 16, 1965 [Feb. 22, 1964], No. 7505/64. Headings B3A, B3E and B3M. A helical fin is applied to a tube 1 by feeding a strip tangentially to the tube between rollers 4 and 7 which are moved axially relative to the tube as the tube is rotated. The roller 4 is rotated by a sleeve 2, driven by a pulley 3, at a slightly slower rate than the tube so that the strip is wound on the tube under tension. The pass between the rollers decreases radially from the tube, the resulting reduction in thickness of the strip at its outer edge causing it to curl onto the tube. The fin is formed with an L- shaped section, the portion parallel to the tube serving to space the turns of the fin. Alternatively, the feed of the rollers determines the fin spacing. The roller 7 is freely mounted in an arm 5 whose pivot point 6 is adjustable parallel to the tube and whose lower end is adjustable parallel to the tube and whose lower end is adjustable by a screw 9. The roller 4 (Fig. 4, not shown), may be provided with radial grooves 10 to produce ribs on one face of the fin. A feeler 13 senses any irregularities in strip fed along a guide 12, and stops the machine or signals an alarm. In a modification (Fig. 5, not shown), the fin remains straight and is formed in a groove produced in the tube surface by a roller 14 immediately following the rollers 4 and 7. A further roller 15 beds the fin in position, the fin then passing between a spacing slot 16 in the roller 14.
