Abstract

959,678. Sewing machines. J. C. FERRE. Sept. 21,1960 [Sept. 23,1959; Sept. 26,1959], No. 32398/60. Heading D1G. In a running-stitch machine after the needle passes downwards through the work the thread loop is held and the needle is unthreaded, the unthreaded needle than ascends and the thread loop is pulled until the free end of the thread is extracted from the work so as to form a top stitch, the work is then fed, the needle descends, is threaded whilst under the work and finally re-ascends to form a bottom stitch. The needle comprises stems 10 and 15 slidable in a fixed sleeve 15<SP>1</SP>. Stem 10 is formed with a point 11 and an open eye 12. Stem 15 terminates in a tongue 14 which abuts a shoulder 13 to close eye 12. The stems are actuated via respective lugs 16, 17 to reciprocate the needle and also to open and close the eye. Sewing is effected with a measured length of thread 24. The needle descends and rises slightly to form a pair of thread loops, which are then gripped between the juxtaposed arms of a pair of horizontally-moving forks 27, 28 Fig. 7. The eye 12 then opens and the unthreaded needle ascends. A horizontally-moving hook 30 then seizes the loop connected to the free end of the thread and draws said end through the work to form a top stitch 31 Fig. 9. The work is fed a stitch length, the needle descends, the needle eye opens and the forks retract to place the thread in the needle eye, Fig. 12. The eye then closes and the needle ascends to form a bottom stitch 32, Fig. 13.
