Abstract

Substantially abrasion - resistant anion - exchange resins are produced by copolymerizing one or more monovinyl aromatic compounds and one or more polyvinyl compounds with vinyl or epoxy group-containing polymerizable polar compounds in amounts of 0.001 to 0.2 mol. per mol. of monovinyl aromatic compound or compounds, said polar compounds being different from the monovinyl compounds, but the same or different from the polyvinyl compounds, the copolymer thus obtained then being haloalkylated and animated in a known manner. Monovinyl aromatic compounds mentioned are styrene, vinyl-toluene, vinyl-ethyl-benzene, vinyl-anisole and acenaphthylene. Polyvinyl compounds listed are divinyl benzene, divinylethylbenzene, trivinylbenzene, divinyl-acetylene, butadiene, diethyleneglycol dimethacrylate, hexahydro-1,3,5-trisacryloyl-5-triazine, divinyl ketone, divinyl sulphone, oxalic acid divinyl ester, divinyl ether and methacrylic acid vinyl ester. Polymerizable polar compounds mentioned are acrylic and methacrylic acids and their derivatives, styrene sulphonic acids and their derivatives, vinyl sulphonic acids and their derivatives, ethyl vinyl ether, methylvinyl ketone, methyl vinyl sulphone and the homologues thereof, esters of vinyl alcohol e.g. vinyl acetate and propionate, maleic acid and its derivatives, vinyl halides, vinylbenzene halides and their homologues, vinyl, pyridine and its homologues, styrene oxide vinyl-toluene oxide, ethyl-styrene oxide, phenyl glycidyl ether, divinyl benzene dioxide, ethylene oxide, propylene oxide and epichlorohydrin. In the examples the polymerization is carried out in an aqueous suspension and the pearl-like polymers obtained are swollen in monochlorodimethyl ether, diluted with petroleum ether or dichloroethane, treated with anhydrous aluminium chloride tritetrachloride or zinc chloride, and the filtered resin treated with an aqueous solution of trimethylamine, dimethylamino ethanol or dimethylamine.
