Abutting structural elements 2 Figs. 4, 5 are connected together by a plate 7 engaging pins 8 on reinforcing parts 6 on the elements and secured by a locking device. The locking device may be a pin 10 having projections 11 and adapted to be passed through a hole in the plate 7 having recesses 12 to accommodate the projections 11 and the head 13 of the pin is seated in a recess in the plate and the pin is turned by a key to engage the projections 11 with recesses in the parts 6. The plate 7 has two ribs 9 at right angles. In a modification Figs. 8, 9 (not shown) the plate 7 is locked by pairs of shear pins in the ribs 9 slid into engagement with holes in the parts 6 by a pinion. A structural element described is a U-section beam, Fig. 1, having metal sheets 1 in zig-zag form covered by plates 2. Such elements are used to form bridges including one modification having two spaced girders, Fig. 11, each formed of two elements connected together at the edges of their flanges and in which the wider sides, or in a modification the narrower sides, form the carriageways. In other modifications the gap between the two girders is filled by further elements in various arrangements or a hollow plate.
