Abstract

958,986. Determining liquid level. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. April 10, 1962 [April 28,1961], No. 13868/62. Heading G1N. A method of locating the surface of a liquid in a tank consists in placing at least two conductive probes 1-14 at different heights inside the tank, and in comparing the electrical resistance existing between the tank wall and each of two of the probes. Commonly driven stepping switches 15, 16 provide for comparing for two adjacent electrodes the resistances between each electrode and the tank, the electrodes being connected each to a strapped pair of contacts on the stepping switches, and the straps on the two switches being displaced with respect to each other to provide for progressive testing up or down the tank. The switches are driven by a motor M which is controlled by the contacts of relays R1, R2, the former of which controls the direction of rotation, and the latter of which opens the motor circuit when the surface of the liquid is between the two electrodes connected for testing by the stepping switches. The liquid level is indicated by the switch position. In the home position the probe resistance is compared with that of a resistor 22 to initiate the hunt for the surface. Relay and motor fail alarms are included; and manual operation of the switches to determine the level is described.
