Abstract

694,737. Measuring liquid levels. ELECTRICITE DE FRANCE. Sept. 28, 1950 [Sept. 29, 1949], No. 23770/50. Class 40 (i) [Also in Group XXXV] A device for measuring or indicating the level of a conducting liquid comprises an electric measuring circuit which includes a vertically oscillating contact which is so disposed that during part of its oscillatory cycle it penetrates the liquid surface and completes the electric circuit. The invention is also applicable to the automatic control of a liquid level (see Group XXXV). In Fig.l, the oscillating contact comprises a needle 11 connected to a loudspeaker 12 energized from the electric mains 18. The needle is so positioned that it penetrates the surface of the liquid for part of the oscillatory cycle; the mean current indicated by meter 15 is consequently a measure of the height of the liquid level. In a further embodiment, Fig. 6, for indicating the difference between two liquid levels, two vertically oscillating contacts are used, one 63 being maintained in a predetermined position with respect to the liquid surface in tube 62 by retroactive control involving amplifier 64 and motor 65, and the other 66 being connected to motor 65 so as always to be at the same height as the contact 63. The contact 66 co-operates with the liquid surface in tube 61, so that the mean current flowing in the circuit as indicated by meter 67 is a measure of the difference between the two liquid levels.
