Abstract

958,967. Time switches. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. July 15, 1960 [July 21, 1959], No. 24726/60. Heading H2B. A cooker timer having separate start and stop spindles 20, 22 each set on a 12-hour dial has a mechanism to prevent any false actuation of the stop mechanism before the start time which could occur through not using a 24-hour dial. The timer also has a mechanism such that pressing in the stop spindle when the start mechanism is not set switches the timer permanently on and that subsequent setting of the start spindle returns control to the clock. A synchronous clock mechanism operates gears 68, 70 each carrying a projection 64, 66. These projections align with the holes 60, 62 in the gears 21, 23 at times which are predetermined by rotating the gears by spindles 20, 22, a clock hand on each spindle indicating start and stop times respectively on individual dials. As the spindles can move axially and a spring 108 urges lever 100 on to the end of spindle 22, when the start time arrives the projection 64 enters hole 60 and the resultant movement of lever 100 is communicated to a switch lever 116 to close contacts (not shown). When the stop time arrives, projection 66 similarly enters hole 62 and the lever 100, deprived of the pivot formed by the end of spindle 20 restores the switch contacts (via lever 116). Strip lever 134 prevents axial movement of the stop spindle to ensure that even when the pin 66 and hole 62 are aligned (which they can be 12 hours ahead of the coned stopping time) no actuation of the switch can occur. The mechanism for switching the clock contacts on for manual control is as follows: A spring-loaded plate 162 engages in a groove on the end of the stop spindle and holds the spindle in. The end of the spindle rooks the lever 100 and thus operates the contacts. Subsequent inward movement of the start spindle releases the latch to allow the stop member to restore and the clock again to take charge. The start and stop times are set by pushing in the spindles 20, 22 and rotating. A spring detent 86 engages gears 21, 23 to prevent them rotating idly and loosing the setting.
