Abstract

958,907. Air registers. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. Feb. 21, 1963 [Feb. 28, 1962], No. 7814/62. Heading F4T. An air register for burners has a circular series of pivotally mounted rectangular curved dampers 12 provided with alternative hinge pins 16 and 16<SP>1</SP> to enable the dampers to be rotated from their closed position either in one sense about one axis or in the opposite sense about the other axis of rotation. The hinge pins 16 and 16<SP>1</SP> are disposed at opposite edges of each damper and are adapted to be held by rotatable retainers 20 in seatings 18 formed by abutments 22 and intermediate abutments 24 on the cylindrical wall 14 of the register. In the position shown in Fig. 3 the retainer 20 holds the hinge pin 16 of one damper between the abutments 24, 22 and releases the hinge pin 16<SP>1</SP> of the adjacent damper. Each retainer 20 is carried by a spindle 26 rotatably mounted in the abutments 24 and extends through the front plate 2. An arm 28 on the end of each spindle is fastened by a screw 45 to one of two lugs 47 to secure the retaining members 20 in one or other of their two positions. One of the spindles 26 is extended through the wind box and has a pointer to indicate the axis about which the damper 12 is set to rotate. The spindles 26 may be linked together for simultaneous operation. The actuating gear for each damper includes a threaded rod 32 pivotally connected to a lug 36 secured to the centre of the damper. The rod 32 is screwed into a nut 38 pivoted to a crank 40 on a shaft 43 rotatably mounted in the front and back plates of the register. The ends of shafts 43 have triangular crank members 44 pivotally connected to driving links 46. One crank member 44A has an arm connected by a link 48 to an operating crank 49 on a single operating shaft 56. The dampers overlap rectangular apertures 15 in the cylindrical wall 14 and the edges of the apertures are provided with woven asbestos or metal strips 19 forming seatings 11 for the dampers. Brackets locate the dampers relative to the apertures 15.
