Abstract

958,600. Delivering sheets. S. D. WARREN CO. Oct. 11, 1961 [Dec. 28, 1960], No. 36518/61. Heading B6H. [Also in Division B8] Apparatus for handling sheets of paper or the like comprises a feeding device and an endless belt conveyer having plates secured to the belt along their leading edges so that they extend tangentially from the belt as it passes around a roller adjacent the device, thus leaving a gap for the introduction of a sheet between the trailing edge of each plate and the belt. Sheets 10 cut from a web are fed between rollers 10, 14. The roller 14 is carried on brackets 16 which are pivoted at 18 and also carry on a transverse member 22 a series of blocks 24 each securing a shaft 28 supporting a compressed air chamber 46 supplied with air through the shaft 28. The shafts and blocks are adjustably secured by set screws 30, 26. A plurality of chambers 46 are thus spaced across the width of the sheets. The chamber comprises a lower surface curved in sheet feed direction and provided with a plurality of parallel slit openings 48 through which air is directed to the right along the surface to form a film of air between the surface and a sheet, thereby reducing the pressure and causing the sheet to move along the surface. The sheet is then deflected downwardly by a surface 49. A conveyer comprises four belts 50 which each has secured thereto by cementing or otherwise a series of rigid nylon plates 62 which constitute grippers which open as the belt passes over the toothed rollers 54, 56. Each sheet is gripped by a gripper on each belt and pulled along the lower run thereof until it is either dropped at the further end by the opening grippers, or is removed from the grippers by stop members 72 positioned between the belts.
