Abstract

958,546. Slip couplings. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. Dec. 18, 1962 [Dec. 21, 1961], No. 45782/61. Heading F2C. [Also in Division H2] An overload slip clutch actuates a switch on overload which reverses an electric motor driving the clutch. Balls 12 are mounted in axial bores of a flange 8a which is keyed to a driving shaft 2 and the balls co-operate with projections 7 fast in a driven cover 6 fast with a sprocket wheel 4. The balls are pressed towards the projections 7 by a plate 13 loaded by a spring 14 the pressure of which is adjustable by means of a nut 15. On overload the balls 12 ride over the projections 7, and the plate 13 is shifted axially and engages and actuates a lever 23 actuating a switch 21 which operates to reverse an electric motor driving the shaft 2. The sprocket wheel 4 may drive the chain of a reciprocatory fluid heater cleaner, and actuation of the switch will act to retract the cleaner. Opening of the switch also actuates an alarm to give an indication of abnormal conditions.
