958,200. Making grids for electron tubes; coiling. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. May 2, 1963 [May 23, 1962], No. 17406/63. Heading B3E. A method of winding grid wire about spaced grid support rods comprises rotating said support rods about an axis parallel to the support rods, simultaneously moving longitudinally said support rods at a uniform rate in the direction of said axis of rotation, feeding grid wire to said support rods by means of a guide member while rotational and longitudinal movement of said support rods is in progress, and moving said guide member relative to said support rods in a direction parallel to said axis of rotation for varying the spacing of successive grid wire turns to be wound upon the support rods. A draw bar 10 rotated by means 12 and moved axially at a uniform rate by a lead screw 26 has clamped at 14 thereto a pair of grid support rods 23, 24 spaced by cross-members 25. Grid wire 31 is directed on to the grid rods 23, 24 by a guide 70 carried by a block 66. In order to vary the spacing of the turns of wire 31 wound on the rods 23, 24 the block 66 is moved parallel to the axis of rotation of the rods 23, 24 by a cam disc 43 having a circle of axially adjustable studs 44 thereon. The studs 44 protrude differing distances and engage a follower 46, on an arm 50 pivoted at 53 and linked at 58 to the block 66, to move the block when the disc 43 is rotated. The disc 43 is rotated by a ratchet 69 driven by a pair of pawl arms 74 and 76 actuated by eccentrics 78, 80 on a shaft 81 rotated at the same speed as the draw bar 10. The pawl arms 74, 76 are in turn brought into and out of driving engagement with the ratchet 69, so that the disc 43 is rotated only when it is desired to change the spacing of the grid turns, by springs 75, 77 whose action is opposed by a lever 82 rocked by a cam 94 which makes one revolution for each grid wound. A solenoid 100 also acts to rock the lever 82. The cam 94 may comprise two adjustable discs 95, 97.
