A method for accurately fixing the location of coil springs of metal wire in an apparatus for producing such coil springs in which the adjustable wire feed is carried out during each alternate half revolution of a shaft is characterized by the fact that during each alternate half revolution of the shaft, a coarse feed of the wire is carried out to a length less than-the total length required for the spring and that during each other alternate half revolution a fine feed is carried out which is terminated electrically when the starting end of the spring then being completed, and which end then serves as an electric contact, engages with an associated contact. A wire 43 is fed by rollers 13, 14 to coiling tools 44, 45, 46 which form it into a spring 102. A coarse feed of the wire 43 is effected by rotation of a gear 5, by a gear 3 on driven control shaft 2, adjustable crank means 6, 9 on the gear 5 oscillating a segment 10 driving a pinion 11 which, in one direction of movement of the segment 10, rotates a shaft 12, and thus the rollers 13, 14 through a freewheel clutch 17. During movement of the segment 10 in the other direction the clutch 17 does not transmit drive. At the completion of the drive movement of the segment 10 a cam 27 on the shaft 2 operates a switch 28 to energize a magnetic clutch 18 and a cam 22 on the shaft 2 also rocks a lever 19 and segment 20 to rotate a pinion 23 to drive the shaft 12, and thus the rollers 13, 14 for a fine feed, through the magnetic clutch 18. As soon as the end of the spring 102 being coiled engages a stop 25, a circuit is closed to de-energize the clutch 18 and stop the wire feed. The stop 25 is moved away from the spring 102 by cams 30, 35, Figs. 7, 8. The spring is then held between a fixed jaw 132 and a cam-operated jaw 131. A pick-up member 106, in the form of a leaf spring, Figs. 15 or 17, and mounted on a slide member 107 radially movable in an intermittently rotated turret 105 is moved outwardly to a position adjacent the spring 102 by a pivoted arm 121 rocked by a cam 125. The end 106a of the member 106 is then pressed between coils of the spring 102 by a cam-operated member similar to the member 145, 147 shown in Fig. 11. The slide 107 is then moved radially inward of the turret 105 which then rotates to carry the spring 102 to a station 108 where the spring may be provided at one end with an eye 102<SP>1</SP>. Further rotation of the turret carries the spring to a transfer means 109 where the spring is taken up by pick-up members 106 on a second turret 110 which carries it to a station 111, where a loop 102<SP>11</SP> is formed in the other end of the spring, and to a delivery station 113. The transfer means 109, Fig. 11, includes a fixed jaw 131 and a cam-operated jaw 132 which hold a spring 102 presented thereto by outward radial movement of the pick-up member 106 by the arm 121. Members 144, 146 and 145, 147 are then moved by a camoperated lever 149 to press one member 106 out of the spring 102 and the other member 106 into the spring 102.
