[Class 35] In a machine for winding stators, the stator is mounted in a turret oscillated between limits corresponding to the slot pitch of the coil being wound, the limits being determined by stops operated in timed relation with the shuttle laying the wires. The stator (not shown) is supported by three adjustable rollers in a turret T angularly oscillated by rack 175 on a bar 176 which is reciprocated by fluid-pressure between stops corresponding in position to the spacing of the slots being wound and the wire is laid along the slots by a shuttle 90 carried on rollers 27 and reciprocated by a roller 25 in a cam slot 24 on the drum 23. This drum also carries at one end a cam 280 operating a switch 281 (not shown) controlling the fluid supply for oscillating the turret while cams 279 at the other end operate a switch 287 (not shown) controlling the movement of fingers arranged at each end of the stator for guiding the wire. The movement of the fingers is thereby interlinked with the shuttle drive (and that with the rocking motion) so that the wire is held away from the winding zone until the shuttle is about to move and the fingers move outwards again near the end of the movement of the shuttle. A pair of stops to limit the angular movement of the turret is provided for each pitch that a coil need be wound, and a valve controlling a pair of fluid cylinders is provided for each pair of stops, the valves in turn being controlled by switches operated in turn by a cam disc on a countershaft gear driven from shaft 19. The speed of the countershaft is such that after the appropriate number of turns has been placed in one slot pair, a switch operates to change the effective pair of stops and enable two slots of different pitch to be wound.
