Abstract
552,027. Coil-winding apparatus. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Sept. 19, 1941, No. 12022. Convention date, Sept. 27, 1940. Drawings to Specification. [Class, 35] .[Also, in Group In a machine for winding coils, particularly in the stators of dynamo-electric machines, having a rotatable"coil-holding.. cage and a reciprocable wire-laying needle, the coil is oscillated in opposite directions by separate power means so controlled that they can only operate alternately. Preferably one power, means is an air pressure cylinder and the other, an electric motor, also operates the wire-laying needle in both directions. A complete automatic machine is described which winds four four-pole stators simultaneously with three concentric coils per pole, alternate poles being reversed. The oscillation of the cage is controlled by motor-driven cam-shafts carrying separate cams each designed to give the correct angular movement for a specific coil. Cain followers, one for each pole, are held against the cams by the air pressure cylinder. Pneumatic means effect successive shifting of the cam followers relative to the cams, as each coil is to be wound. The needle is mounted on a table reciprocated by a drum cam. During operation means are provided for:- (a) positively holding the cage against rotation while the needle is travelling along a slot, operated by a subsidiary groove on the needle drum cam, (b) moving a shuttle over the needle at the end of each stroke, to facilitate the laying of end loops, operated by the needle table through a rack and cam, (c) limiting the speed of movement of the' cage under the influence of the air pressure cylinder, to prevent the cam follower banging.. against the cam surface when the poles are changed, operated by a one-way clutch geared to the electric motor, (d) reducing the'speed of the motor during the' action of (c), (e) rendering the air pressure cylinder operative only at the required end of the stroke, operated through an air-valve by the needle table, (f) reversing the action of (e) when the pole is to be wound in the reverse direction, operated through a solenoid controlled air-valve by a timer disc. All operations necessary to change to successive coils and poles are effected by this timer disc which rotates once per winding cycle, and has circumferentially spaced adjustable lugs which engage various switch contacts. At the end of a winding cycle the timer disc stops the motor by applying first a reverse voltage and then a brake, Resetting is effected by rotating the cages manually to a standard position, when a switch is closed which brings the machine automatically back to a condition in which, after fresh stators have been inserted, it may be started on a fresh cycle by a push-button. A further push-button allows the machine to be stopped at any point in the cycle and restarted without resetting.
