Abstract

Cobaltiprotoporphyrin is made by adding an acetic acid solution of protoporphyrin drop by drop to a solution of cobaltous acetate in glacial acetic acid at a temperature of from 30 DEG to 45 DEG C. while passing air through the solution, adjusting the pH of the reaction mixture to about 2.5, adding a volume of water two or three times that of the reaction mixture, filtering off the precipitate formed, adjusting the pH of the filtrate to about 5.2 and isolating the cobaltiprotoporphyrin, for example by filtration, centrifugation or by extraction with chloroform or ether. The cobaltous acetate solution may be prepared from cobaltous oxide or cobaltous carbonate. Examples are given.
