In a multicolour printing machine wherein sheets are fed by grippers on chains or in transfer drums, registration of the sheets is effected before, in, or after each printing unit by movement of the grippers after they have gripped a sheet. The grippers may be moved in or against the direction of travel of the sheet, or transversely thereof. As shown, the gripper system comprises a gripper support rail 1 and a gripper shaft 2 which both pass through a central, displaceable, carriage 3. The rail 1 is divided into several parts connected pivotally at 14 and 9, and the shaft 2 is divided into two parts which are mounted in self-aligning bearings 10 in the carriage 3, so that when the carriage is displaced the shaft 2 follows the movement of the rail 1. The carriage 3 is displaceable along grooved support arms 5, rotatably mounted on a main stationary shaft 6, by a lever 4 secured to a shaft 4<SP>1</SP> which is oscillated by a lever 7. The lever 7 has a roller engaging an eccentric disc 8 connected to an infinitely-variable drive 13 whereby the disc can be angularly adjusted whilst the machine is running to adjust the position of the carriage 3. The carriage adjustment is minute, and is effected only when the grippers are closed to grip a sheet. Since the carriage is central, the grippers at the centre move a greater distance than the outer ones. The grippers are controlled in known manner by means of levers 12 carrying rollers in contact with eccentrics 11 at both sides of the machine. The carriage 3 may not be central. In a modification, the rail 1 and shaft 2 are divided lengthwise into several parts which can be displaced laterally of the side walls of the machine, so that the grippers stretch a sheet transversely to correct register thereof.
