Fireproof, soundproof "sandwich " material which will absorb X-rays, γ-rays &c. comprises outer layers of glass fibres or fabric e.g. cotton, rayon, P.V.C., polyvinylidene chloride, coated with synthetic resin, and a core of plastics material e.g. P.V.C., containing powdered lead, lead compound, tungsten or tungsten compound. Alternatively the fibre or fabric may only be incorporated in one outer layer. For fireproofing tritolyl phosphate or other alkyl aryl phosphates and possibly boric acid or antimony oxide are added to the outer plastics coating.
