A rotary pump comprises a cylindrical housing 1 containing a cylindrical rotor 3 of smaller diameter mounted on the end of a driving shaft 2 which is journalled eccentrically in a back cover plate 21, the periphery of the rotor including housings 8 for vanes 10 of dumb-bell shape, in longitudinal cross-section, pivoted in grooves 9 formed at one end of each housing 8. The edges, or ends, 11 of each vane are of identical cylindrical shape whereby either edge can be inserted in the corresponding groove 9 and the vanes can be interchanged, reversed, or replaced when the edges sweeping the inner surface of the housing 1 become worn (Fig. 6, not shown). The edges 11 are made separately from material having a low coefficient of friction e.g; material containing molybdenum disulphide, graphite, or polytetrafluoroethylene, the body 13 of each vane being made from material resistant to corrosion e.g. brass or stainless steel. Each edge includes a longitudinal recess into which the body of the vane is pressed. Alternatively, the edges 9 and body 10 are integral with one another. The vanes may be supported in permanent contact with the surface 12 by springs, rubber compression elements, or the like. The back cover plate 21 includes an inlet port 25 and an outlet port 26 (Fig. 4), each extending through an arc of 90 degrees or less; alternatively, the ports are included in the housing 1. The housing is clamped between the back cover plate 21 and a front cover plate 15 by bolts 20 (Fig. 1), sealing rings 18 being provided, as shown, in each cover plate. An annular projection 19 is included in both cover plates which engage with a corresponding recess 7 on each face of the rotor with just sufficient clearance to allow the rotor to rotate freely. A plurality of pumps of the kind described may be arranged in series to form a multi-stage pump (not shown).
