Abstract
957,465. Extruding. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Nov. 13, 1962 [Nov. 20, 1961], No. 41371/61. Heading B3P. A metal tube extrusion press has a mandrel 8 which moves axially through the die during extrusion when it is supported at its outer end to prevent any deflection from the axis. A reduced end nose 19 on the mandrel engages within a sleeve 20 which is supported initially by a frangible pin 22. The latter is sheared by pressure applied to the mandrel head 9 by an hydraulic ram 43, and allows the sleeve 20 to move downwardly in a bore 17 of the die and thus guide the mandrel. The billet 44 is preferably of beryllium, supported against a graphite ring 39 and backed by a mild steel collar 41. Die 4 is supported within a conical bore of the container 1 by a stool 5 and wedge assembly 7 actuated by an hydraulic ram 6 hinged at 29 and whose piston rod engages within a slot 34 of the lower wedge. The container is heated by electrothermal braid 42 insulated with glass tape, and the die, mandrel and wedges are coated with graphite. A specific example is given for extruding a beryllium tube.
