Abstract

Dibenzothiophenes and dibenzofurans which are substituted by cycloalkyl groups are produced by reacting a dibenzothiophene or a dibenzofuran with a cycloalkene in the presence of an alkylation catalyst. The products may contain up to 4 cycloalkyl groups which may, for example, be cyclopentyl, cyclohexyl or cycloheptyl groups and the dibenzothiophene or dibenzofuran used as starting material may contain a hydrocarbon substituent, e.g. a methyl, ethyl or isopropyl group or a halogen atom, e.g. chlorine, bromine or fluorine. These substituents remain unchanged in the product. Suitable catalysts are, for example, a Friedel-Crafts type catalyst such as aluminium chloride, aluminium bromide, ferric chloride, stannic chloride or borontrifluoride or an acid, for example hydrofluoric, sulphuric or phosphoric acid. Examples of the products obtainable are 2-cyclohexyldibenzothiophene, 4-cyclohexyldibenzothiophene, 2-cyclohexyl-7-phenyldibenzothiophene, 4-cyclohexyl-2-phenyldibenzothiophene, 4-cyclohexyldibenzofuran and 4, 6-dicyclohexyldibenzofuran. The amount of cycloalkene used will depend on the number of cycloalkyl groups it is desired to introduce. The products are normally mixtures of isomers.
