Abstract

The invention comprises dyes of formula <FORM:0957418/C3/1> where R is a monocyanobenzene radicle substituted by Cl or NO2, Z is H, Cl or Me and X is an alkylene radicle of up to 4 carbon atoms having a carboxyl group esterified with a saturated, unsubstituted aliphatic alcohol of up to 5 carbon atoms. The dyes are made in usual fashion from appropriate diazotized cyanoanilines and coupling components acidic coupling being preferred. Specified coupling components are N-(m-methylphenyl) and N-phenyl-N b -cyanoethyl-b -aminopropionic acid methyl esters and specified diazo components are 3-chloro-4-cyano-, 2-cyano-5-chloro- and 2 - cyano - 4 - nitro - anilines. The dyes colour polyamides and polyethylene terephthalates. Examples are given of the preparation of the dyes and their use in colouring polyamide and polyethylene terephthalate fibres in orange and bluish-red shades.
