In a combined-valve-and-siphon discharge apparatus for a flushing cistern 1 including a dome open at its bottom end to the cistern, to which is attached a spaced inner tube 6 extending below the said open end and carrying an annular valve member 12 to seal against the periphery of the cistern discharge outlet 2, the dome comprises a tube 7, the tubes 6, 7 being of synthetic plastic material and closed at the top by an attached member 8, and the lower end of the tube 7 being received in and attached to a closure member 10, through which the tube 6 extends and is held and having ports 11 as shown, the tube 6 having ports 15 as shown at a level above the maximum static level of the liquid in the cistern when re-charged. The tube 6 extends beyond the valve member 12 to project into the outlet 2 for guidance and has ports 13 below the member 12 so that in the sealing position, the ports are below the outlet 2, and in the raised position of the member 12, are above it and between the cistern 1 and the outlet 2, so that syphonic action is initiated. The tube assembly is raised by an operating lever 9 and may include a lead weighting ring 14 to ensure its return to the sealing position upon release of the lever 9. The outlet 2 is coupled by a nut 3 to a downflow pipe.
