Abstract

957,180. Cleaning pipes. W. PURDIE (DECOKING) Ltd. Aug. 15, 1960, No. 28255/60. Heading F2N. [Also in Division B3] In an apparatus for the surface treatment of pipes or tubes a cage comprising annular assemblies 17, 18 surrounding a pipe 13 to be treated is rotatably mounted in a casing 10 for angular movement relatively to the casing and the pipe, at least one surface treating element 19 being mounted between the assemblies 17, 18 and made to bear against the pipe surface. The casing 10 and the cage 17, 18 are each formed of arcuate portions hingedly secured together at one end and locked together at the other end after clamping around the pipe 13. The assemblies 17, 18 are spaced apart by bars 38 and have pivotally mounted thereon links 34 which carry the elements 19, the latter consisting of metal cutters, polishing heads or brushes of wire, nylon or fibre. Leaf springs 36 controlled by adjusters 38a serve to maintain pressure of the elements 19 on the pipe 13. The cage is supported and constrained by rubber-faced rollers 24, 26, the rollers 24 being journalled in brackets 25 secured to the inside of the casing 10, and the rollers 26, which serve to rotate the cage, being mounted on a drive shaft 27. Inlet and outlet pipes 31, 32 are provided on the casing for passing therethrough a stream of water, air or a cleaning liquid or gas which also serves to carry away material removed from the pipe. Rollers 39, which may be spring- mounted, are adjustably mounted in brackets 40 and serve to guide the pipe 13 through the apparatus. The casing may be mounted on a lead screw or guide rail so that it can be moved axially relative to the pipe, or the apparatus may be fixed and the pipe moved through it. Solenoids operable from a control handle may serve to lock the casing halves together. Operation of the apparatus may be automatically controlled by means of an electronic control box.
