Abstract
957,135. Seats. A. P. PEDRICK, and W. J. MACIUPA. Feb. 19, 1963 [July 7, 1962], No. 26133/62. Headings A4J and A4M. [Also in Divisions A3 and F2] Apparatus for preventing a person seated in a vehicle, which may be decelerated, from being carried forward comprises means operative to grip on to a person's back, as a result of an air pressure created in such gripping means which is less than the air pressure existing in that part of the vehicle in which the person is seated. The gripping means may comprise a pad operative against the back of a person's clothing. The pad may form an integral part of the upholstery of the seat which the person occupies. Alternatively the pad may be a separate member from the seat and be secured to a fixed part of the vehicle. As shown the pad comprises a diaphragm 7 formed with holes which communicate with a space 6 in the pad. A pipe 4, valve 3 and pipe 10 connect the space 6 to a main suction pump 1 connected to a suitable pump. The valve 3 (see Division F2) is automatically operable in response to a predetermined deceleration of the vehicle. In a modification shown in Fig. 4 valves 32 are provided to prevent the vacuum condition existing in the space 6 from communicating with the holes 31 in the pad unless a person's back presses against the diaphragm 7 to compress a plurality of springs 33 and thereby open the valves 32.
