Abstract

957,011. Control of motors; boosting by dynamo-electric machines. JOHN BROWN & CO. Ltd., and E. M. LANGHAM. Sept. 20, 1960 [July 16, 1959], No. 24513/59. Headings H2H and H2J. So that a squirrel cage induction motor 11, e.g. for a fan in an inaccessible position, or for traction, may have a characteristic similar to that of a D.C. series motor, it is supplied from an A.C. generator 12 whose field 13 is in series with a D.C. series motor 15 which drives it. The D.C. motor circuit may also include a resistor 19 (Fig. 1, not shown), such that the voltage drop across the circuit equals the back e.m.f. of the motor at the middle of its speed range, to ensure an approximately constant power output. As shown, this resistor is replaced by a constant speed negative booster 23. In addition, to a series field winding 21, the booster may have a winding 25 in series with a rectifier R2 and a battery B1 across the D.C. supply; the battery voltage is such that, if the supply voltage is at a minimum, no current flows through field winding 25, but if this voltage rises a current flows in a direction to cause the " booster " to deduct the additional voltage, so that the voltage at the motor terminals remains constant.
