Abstract

A composition for treatment of a copper or copper-containing surface comprises a mercaptan of formula CnH2n+1SH, wherein n is from 12 to 25, and a non-abrasive copper-tarnish remover. n is preferably from 16 to 21. The mercaptan provides a thin, colourless, non-oily protective layer on clean surfaces bonding to the copper through the thiol grouping and the bond resists washing with dilute alkaline or acid solutions and with detergents. The preferred non-abrasive copper-tarnish removers are acidic cleaners with a pH preferably below 2.5; and comprise a weak organic acid, e.g. citric acid, sulfamic acid and an alkali metal halide, e.g. NaCl,KCd. HCl is also a suitable cleaner. Suitable acids have a pH between 1-5, are water-soluble, non-oxidizing and stable. The aliphatic mercaptan should have from 12-25 carbon atoms illustrated by n-hexadecane-1-thiol, n-dodecane-1-thiol, n-octadecane-1-thiol and n-hemicosane-1-thiol. Controlled additions of mild abrasives may be incorporated in the composition, up to 20% by weight of the formulation, as when removing heavy sulphide tarnish. Suitable abrasives are finely divided and modified silicas, clays, diatomaceous earths and precipitated chalks. In addition non-ionic surfactants, viscosity improvers and thickeners may also be present. The thickeners are chosen from colloidal alumina, natural gums, e.g. guar gum, carboxy methyl cellulose, sodium alginate, hectorite &c. and the choice depends on the pH. The mercaptan concentration should be from 0.5-25.0% by weight, preferably 0.5-10.0%, and in aqueous liquid compositions the prepared formulations contain 1-15% mercaptan, 0.01-25% weak organic acids, 0.01-25% alkali metal halide, 0.05-1.0% surfactant, 0-20% abrasive, sufficient water to emulsify mercaptan and sufficient acid-stable thickeners to provide the desired viscosity.
