Abstract

Impure methyl-ethyl ketone containing water, aldehydes and chlorination products, e.g. chloroketones, especially 3-chlorobutanone-2, is purified by intimately mixing the impure ketone with an aqueous alkali metal hydroxide solution of 20 to 30% by weight strength at 90 DEG to 150 DEG C. under a pressure sufficient to ensure that no substantial evaporative loss of organic phase occurs; then separating the organic layer and recovering the pure ketone therefrom by distillation. The preferred volume ratio of ketone to alkaline solution is 2:1 to 1:10 and the alkali treatment lasts for 1 to 30 minutes. The mixing is performed in an apparatus made from, or lined with, corrosion-resistant material and designed for intense mixing of two phases. It is of advantage to prepurify the starting material by distillation and degassing. Specification 876,024 is referred to.
