Abstract
A process for the production of dimensionally and thermally stable elements from polyolefin/filler/organic peroxide mixtures comprises effecting cross-linking during or after shaping by heating the mixture in an alternating electrical field of frequency more than 200 megacycles per second, the mixture containing a filler comprising carbon in an amount (e.g. 10 to 250 parts per 100 of polymer) sufficient to produce a dielectric loss factor of the order of 1. Specified polyolefins are those derived from ethylene, propylene and/or butylene, and the filler may be gas-, flame-, acetylene- and/or furnace-soot and/or graphite. Optional ingredients are guanidines, lead salts, lead oxide, magnesium oxide and zinc oxide. In the example the element is tube sections and the heating is in an electron furnace using a frequency of 2400 megacycles per second.
