956,575. Measuring length. DEUTSCHE AKADEMIE DER WISSENSCHAFTEN ZU BERLIN. Sept. 26, 1960 [Sept. 24, 1959], No. 33056/60. Heading G1M. The length which a hank of thread, wound on a multiarm precision reel at less than standard tension, would be if it were at standard tension is measured by folding in one of the arms of the reel, loading the hank between the arms adjacent the folded one with a weight 1 and aligning arms 7a, 8 of an adjustable device shown in Fig. 1 with the angle formed by the hank between the suspended weight and the adjacent arms of the reel. The weight is adjusted to exactly the mid point of the hank by using the scales on arms 7a, 8 and the tension is shown by the intersection of the graduation on arm 7b corresponding to the weight 1 and the graduation lines on member 4. If this tension is not within the desired limits weight 1 must be altered. When all these adjustments have been made arms 7a, 8 are realigned with the hank angle and a slide 5 is moved until it contacts arm 7b. The graduations on slide 5 then give a reading of the elongation of the hank due to weight 1. The thickness of the hank is measured so that appropriate corrections can be made when calculating the total length of the thread.
