Abstract

956,554. Disc brakes. GIRLING Ltd. Aug. 31, 1960 [June 4, 1959], No. 19096/59. Heading F2E. A disc brake has a rotatable disc 10 and non-rotatable surfaces 19, 21 on opposite sides of disc 10, the disc carrying angularlyspaced blocks 12 of friction material which are of greater axial thickness than the disc and are mounted in radial openings 11, the blocks being retained in openings 11 by readilyreleasable retainers 13 and being removed from the disc in a radial direction. A ring 21 is moved by three angularly-spaced pistons 25 through rods 26, to engage and axial move the blocks relative to disc 10, against the flange 19 of a ring 17 fixed to a stationary plate 14 to which the cylinders 24 of pistons 25 are fixed. The ring 21 is prevented from rotation by lugs 23 engaging lugs 22 on plate 14. Rotation of the disc draws air into the brake and expels it via openings 28, cooling being aided by the ring 21 and flange 19 having large heat capacities.
