Abstract
The invention comprises compounds of the formula A2B10H10 where A is a cation derived from a primary or secondary amine or from an organo-substituted hydrazine; the amine or substituted hydrazine should be capable of forming a salt with hydrochloric acid, and may contain an alkylene or morpholine ring. The invention also includes the preparation of an amine salt of the anion B10H1011 by reacting a decaboryl bis (organic sulphide) (prepared by reaction of decaborane and an organic sulphide) with a primary, secondary, or tertiary amine; reaction may take place in an excess of the amine or in an inert medium, for example benzene or tetrahydrofuran. An aqueous solution of the amine salt formed may be passed through a strongly acidic ion exchange resin to produce the acid H2.B10H10.(H2O)m as described in Specification 956,391. The acid is then reacted with an amine or substituted hydrazine to form salts of the formula A2B10H10. Examples describe the preparation of [(CH3)3CNH3]2B10H10, [(C2H5)2NH2]2B10H10, [(C2H5)3NH]2B10H10, [i-C3H7NH3]2B10H10, and [CH3NH.CH3NH2]2B10H10; several other compounds which may be obtained by similar methods are listed. Aqueous solutions of the salts are useful as electrolytes, e.g. in electrical switches. The salts are inflammable in contact with nitric acid and may be used as components of rocket fuels.
