956,135. Igniting miners' lamps. COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd. Aug. 15, 1960 [May 15, 1959], No. 16735/59. Heading F4F. A miner's flame safety lamp is provided with an igniter comprising a catalyst and means by which the catalyst, a combustion supporting atmosphere and a flammable gas or vapour can be brought into contact with one another. In one form, the catalyst which may be a bead 4, Fig. 1 (Prov.), of platinum is carried by a pivoted arm 3 so that it can be brought close to the wick 2 of the lamp which is fed with fuel from the reservoir 1. A second reservoir 5 in the base of the lamp contains hydrogen which may be fed by a valve 6 to a capillary tube 8 so that a jet of hydrogen can be directed on to the bead 4 causing it to glow. In a modification, alcohol from a cylinder within the fuel reservoir may be projected onto a bead of iridium black, causing it to ignite. In a further modification, the flammable vapour which may be alcohol is contained in a tube 20 with an airtight lid 21, the tube being lined by a wick 27. The lid, which carries a bead 4 of platinum, iridium or palladium, is movable by a push-rod 23 against the action of a spring 24 so as to open the tube to the atmosphere in the presence of which the alcohol on the wick 27 is ignited and thence the fuel on the wick 2 of the main fuel tank.
