Abstract

956,110. Making coils; soldering. G. CAMARDELLA. Nov. 19, 1962 [Dec. 18, 1961], No. 43699/62. Headings B3A, B3E and B3R. Apparatus for effecting automatically finishing operations on self-supporting coils delivered by an automatic winding machine comprises a turn-table with a vertical axis provided at regular intervals on its periphery with means for receiving and supporting the coils delivered by the winding machine and rotating intermittently in synchronism therewith by steps of angular extent corresponding to the angular interval between the said receiving and supporting means, so as to transfer the coil at each step to another stage of operations, the said means being mounted on the said turn-table so as to be capable of turning in radial planes between a position corresponding to a vertical position of the axis of the coil supported by the said means and a position corresponding to a horizontal position of the said axis. A horizontal disc 3 is rotated in steps around a fixed vertical pillar 2 by an arm 9, rocked by a cam 11 driven in synchronism with a coil-winding machine, which carries a pin 13 engaging successive teeth of a wheel 14 fixed to the disc 3. The disc 3 carries in each of six radial recesses 3<SP>1</SP> a block 4 formed with a coil-supporting spindle 5 and pivoted about a pin 6 extending across the recess 3<SP>1</SP>. The spindles 5 are normally held by spring means in a vertical position but are rocked to a horizontal position at stations B and F by the engagement of a roller 8 on the block 4 with cusps 7<SP>1</SP>, 7<SP>11</SP> of a fixed cam 7. In operation, at station A a coil 15, released from the winding mandrel, is received on a spindle 5. A solvent, e.g. cellulose acetate, to dissolve the insulation of the wire is sprayed on the coil by a device 16. At station B the ends of the coil are immersed in a bath 19 of tin alloy which is heated by a thermostaticallycontrolled electrical resistance 21, the surface of the bath being kept free from slag by a blade 23 moved horizontally across the surface by a cam-operated lever means 36, Fig. 3 (not shown). Alternatively, Fig. 4 (not shown), the bath may be rotated about a vertical axis and have a fixed slag removing blade. When the ends of the coil are not parallel the coil is rocked about its axis by a rack 57, reciprocated by a cam, engaging a pinion 58 on the spindle 5. At station E the ends 24 of the coil 15 are bent up 90 degrees against fixed counter tools 29 by a fluid pressure reciprocated tool 25. Alternatively, one end could be bent up and the other down or other bends made using stations C and D. The solvent applied at A has evaporated by the time the coil reaches F where a tool 30 and, if necessary, air jets, reject the coil 15.
