955,974. Expansion joints for concrete pavements. GROSSPETER-LINDEMANN G.m.b.H. STEINZENGWERKE. July 4, 1960 [July 4, 1959], No. 23333/60. Heading E1V. Expansion joints or crack inducing means in concrete pavements comprises a tube 5, e.g., of synthetic plastic material, which is longitudinally slit at its upper peripheral portion and which is filled with a sealing composition, e.g., bitumen composition after the concrete has hardened. The tube may be provided with an upwardly open extension 6 which is also filled with sealing composition. Strip-like projections 7, or other means, may be provided for securing the tube 5 to a joint board 4. The slit 8 may be cut after the concrete has hardened or may be pre-formed, in which case the sides of the tube are held apart during concreting by removable spacers. The tube may have a downwardly directed pointed strip 15 Fig. 2, which is adapted to be located above a crack inducing bar 13 in the lower portion of the pavement. The joint board 4 and the tube 5 respectively, may be supported by a U-sectioned holder and a pin, carried by a metal plate fixed to the formwork at the sides of the pavement, Fig. 5 (not shown). A foil strip folded into an inverted V may be introduced into the tube to define a recess therein from which the sealing composition is excluded.
